Biographies

Below are a selection of biographies from our team of interviewers.

Thomas Corby BA (Oxon)
Thomas studied Modern History at New College, Oxford University. He was awarded a Scholarship after finishing fourth in his Preliminary Exams. He then went on to take a First Class degree from his finals. He is teaching at Eton College before embarking on a career in the law.

Dr Mark Lee BA Hons (Cantab), MB BS (London)
Mark studied Pre-Clinical Medicine at Downing College, Cambridge University specialising in Experimental Psychology in his 3rd Year. He went on to complete his Clinical training at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals Medical School. While at Guy's Hospital, his research into Kidney Transplantation was presented at the American Transplant Congress 2008 in Toronto. He was also selected for a sub-internship placement in Neurology at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Hospital in the US for part of his elective in 2008. Mark qualified in 2009 and is now a junior doctor in the Oxford area.

Chris Stainton BA Hons (Oxon), MPhil (Cantab)
Chris studied Geography at Merton College, Oxford, achieving a Distinction in his Preliminary Exams, followed by a First in his Final Exams. Chris was a Postmaster (Senior Scholar) and received two University awards for fieldwork and exam performance. He was also presented with a national prize by the Regional Science Association for his dissertation. Chris then completed an MPhil in Development Studies at Robinson College, Cambridge. Chris received national awards from the Royal Geographical Society at both GCSE and A Level. He now works for a credit hedge fund.

Sophie McGrath BA Hons (Oxon)
Sophie McGrath has just completed a degree in English Language and Literature at Somerville College, Oxford University. She was awarded a Coombs Scholarship after a distinction in her Preliminary Exams. She is currently taking a post-university gap year in order to pursue her musical interests, before continuing in academia.

James Carter BA Hons (Oxon), AM (Chicago)
Jamie studied Philosophy and Theology at Oxford before taking an MA in Philosophy at the University of Chicago, where he was awarded a graduate award for a year’s research in the United States. He is currently completing a DPhil in moral and religious philosophy at Oxford as an AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council) doctoral scholar. He also teaches at both Oxford and Oxford Brookes Universities.

Sagar Shah BA (Oxon), MSc (London)
Sagar is a graduate economist at the Bank of England, and recently completed an Msc in Economics at the London School of Economics. He achieved 1st class honours in his undergraduate degree in Economics and Management at St. Anne’s College, Oxford University - where he received the Clayman and the UK India Business Council Scholarships.

Nadia von Benzon BA Hons (Oxon), MSc
Nadia studied Geography at St. Hilda’s College, Oxford University.  Whilst at university, Nadia participated in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities including students charities, RAG, kayaking, and her college JCR Committee.  Following her degree Nadia spent a year working for a student charity and has just completed an MSc in Environmental Technology at Imperial College, London.  Nadia began studying for a PhD at Imperial College, London in September.


David Ault BA Hons (Cantab), MSc (
Manchester), MA (Cantab)
David studied Maths and then Astrophysics at Cambridge, before doing a Masters in Astronomy at Jodrell Bank with the University of Manchester. Since then he has spent two years training as an actor and had recently returned from a six-month tour of India performing Shakespeare. He is now working as a freelance actor, writer and science communicator.

Matthew Bardo MA (Oxon)
Matthew studied Philosophy and Theology at Oxford University, gaining a 2:1 BA degree. He went on to study for an MA in Contemporary Global Ethics at King’s College London, from which he graduated with Distinction. After a stint at the BBC in Manchester, Matthew moved to Bath, where he now works as a Researcher for a production company.

Katherine Gaynor MBiochem (Oxon)

Katherine studied Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University. At the end of her second year she was successful in achieving a placement with the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) to work in laboratories in Brno, Czech Republic.  In October 2007 she was awarded a MRC Studentship enabling her to undertake a three year DPhil in Clinical Medicine at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford.

Robert Colborn BA (Oxon)
Robert read Classics at New College, Oxford. He was awarded an undergraduate scholarship for his performance in Honour Moderations, and won the Gaisford Essay Prize in his Final examinations. He currently holds a postgraduate scholarship at New College, where he continues his studies in Latin and Greek literature. 

Gareth Haslam Bsc Hons (Dunelm), MPhil (Cantab)
Gareth studied physics at Trevelyan College, Durham University. After obtaining a 1st Class Honours degree he went on to study more about the practical application of science and technology through the MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development at Cambridge University. He is now a PhD student in the Materials Science Department at Cambridge working on hydrogen fuel cells. 

Katie Sissons BA (Oxon)
Katie studied Human Sciences at Jesus College, Oxford.  After her Preliminary Examinations, she was awarded a Scholarship, and her third year dissertation was awarded the Aled Davies Prize in Biological Sciences.  She is currently working in the field of international public health.

Ed Jones BA Hons (Oxon)
Ed studied Music at Christ Church, Oxford where he was also an Academical Clerk in the Cathedral Choir. He has been teaching at Reed’s School, Cobham since September 2006 and he is now Assistant Director of Music there.
